Ethereum developers have committed EIP-8141, known as Frame Transactions, for inclusion in the blockchain’s 2027 Hegotá upgrade, potentially making stablecoin payments and wallet transactions significantly easier for users.
One of Ethereum’s longstanding usability challenges is that every transaction requires a gas fee paid in ether (ETH). This means a wallet holding hundreds of dollars in stablecoins can still be unable to transfer funds if it does not contain enough ETH to cover gas costs.
EIP-8141 aims to address that problem. Ethereum core developers moved the proposal to “Scheduled for Inclusion” during their Aug. 27 meeting, confirming Frames as part of Hegotá rather than merely a candidate. Hegotá is expected in 2027, following the Glamsterdam upgrade scheduled for later this year.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, one of EIP-8141’s 10 authors, said significant progress on Frames had been taking place quietly over recent months.
Frame Transactions separate different parts of an Ethereum transaction. One step verifies authorization, another determines who pays the transaction fee, while additional steps execute the required actions. Crucially, the account initiating a transaction would no longer need to be the same account paying the gas fee.
A payment application could therefore cover gas costs for users or accept stablecoins and handle the ETH payment itself. Ethereum validators would still receive fees in ETH, but users would not necessarily need to own ether.
Some crypto wallets already provide similar features through third-party services that bundle and submit transactions. EIP-8141 would bring this functionality into Ethereum’s standard transaction system.
Frames could also improve security by combining related actions. For example, token approval and a trade could be executed together, allowing the approval to be reversed automatically if the trade fails.
Another major feature is programmable transaction authorization. Ethereum accounts could establish customized approval rules, potentially allowing users to replace compromised or outdated keys without transferring assets to another address. This could also support future quantum-resistant authentication methods.
EIP-8141 remains a draft, meaning technical details could change before Hegotá launches. Frame Transactions are not yet available for Ethereum users.
