Hunter Biden, son of former U.S. President Joe Biden, is preparing to enter the cryptocurrency market with the launch of a new memecoin called LAPTOP, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The LAPTOP token is scheduled to launch on the Base blockchain on Sept. 9, with a total supply of 1 billion tokens. The project draws its name from the controversy surrounding Biden’s abandoned laptop, which became a major political issue ahead of the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

Under the token’s distribution plan, 30% of the LAPTOP supply will be allocated to the founders, including Biden. Those tokens cannot be sold for six months and will vest over a period exceeding two years, limiting the amount that can immediately enter circulation.

Another 20% of the token supply will be distributed through two airdrops. Eligible recipients are expected to include crypto wallets holding losses on the TRUMP memecoin, subscribers to Biden’s Substack and people on a mailing list operated by his friend Andrew Callaghan, a video journalist.

The project also plans to burn 30% of LAPTOP’s supply if certain milestones are reached. Potential triggers include Democrats winning the 2028 U.S. election, Bitcoin setting a new all-time high, or LAPTOP’s market capitalization surpassing that of the TRUMP memecoin.

Biden appeared to confirm the project on X by teasing the LAPTOP ticker alongside a video montage featuring news coverage of his laptop. The computer was left at a Delaware repair shop in 2019, and material from it, including business emails and text messages, later became public.

The launch places LAPTOP alongside a growing category of politically themed cryptocurrencies. The TRUMP memecoin, released in early 2025, initially surged to a market capitalization of roughly $15 billion before falling sharply. At the time of writing, TRUMP was trading near $2, giving it a market value of approximately $600 million.

Trump’s financial disclosures showed about $1.4 billion in income from memecoin and other cryptocurrency-related deals last year, highlighting the substantial sums that political figures have generated from the expanding crypto sector.
