Alibaba’s import e-commerce platform Koala adopts a full-link traceability blockchain system

China-based e-commerce giant Alibaba announced that it is adopting a blockchain traceability system, Sina Finance reported.

Alibaba’s import e-commerce platform Koala has upgraded the full-link traceability system. Customers can now scan a QR code with Alipay and view the product information from custom clearance and logistics.

Zhao Jiechen, supply chain quality manager of Koala Purchasing, said that blockchain’s traceability lets customers know where their goods come from, where they have been, and where they are, which offers transparency to consumers.

Alibaba acquired Koala for $2 billion in 2019. A journalist said that the traceability blockchain system was developed after the acquisition. Koala will continue to apply the blockchain system to platform merchants and overseas direct mail services because it plans to reach 62 countries and regions and cover 2,897 product categories and 7,432 brands.

Meanwhile, Avril Group’s leading fresh egg brand Matines is also using a similar blockchain technology for its products. It offers a personalized experience to its customers through its enhanced information and traceability.

A QR code is printed inside each egg box to give buyers access to a wide range of data related to the eggs they purchase and consume. The information includes details about the farming method, how the hens are fed, date the eggs are laid, packing center, date of packing, date when the eggs are received and date of the dispatch from the warehouse.

The brand uses this approach for transparency as it works on its goal of raising hens without antibiotic treatment, feeding them with 100% French cereals and incorporating good breeding practices.

“Advancing traceability also means contributing directly to the Avril Group’s approach to corporate social responsibility (CSR), particularly in sectors related to quality livestock, (French origin, organic) and the consideration of animal welfare,” the announcement from a press release read. “These standards have already been adopted in more than 1000 farms (including 400 laying hen farms).”
