The Energy Web Foundation(EWF), a non-profit organization that aims to accelerate the commercial deployment of blockchain technology in the energy sector, has announced that it has surpassed the milestone of 100 affiliates.

The announcement comes as German utility EnBW, French multinational energy company Total, and State Grid EV Service Co., a subsidiary of the State Grid Corporation of China, the world’s largest utility, joined the Energy Web ecosystem as EWF Affiliates.

Co-founded by Rocky Mountain Institute and Grid Singularity in 2017, the EWF has become the largest energy blockchain ecosystem comprising diverse energy companies, utilities, grid operators, renewable generators, software developers, commercial end-use customers, and startups.

The EWF aims to harness blockchain’s potential to accelerate the transition to a decentralized, democratized, decarbonized, and resilient energy system. It has developed Energy Web Chain, an open-source, scalable blockchain platform specifically designed for the energy sector’s regulatory, operational, and market needs.

EWF chief commercial officer Jesse Morris said that the Energy Web Chain will launch its genesis block this year.

“As the forces of digitalization and decentralization continue to drive a massive global energy transition, the Energy Web Chain—which will launch its genesis block later this year—presents an enormous opportunity for market participants of all shapes and sizes to take advantage of a novel solution to the challenges they face,” Morris said.

“Our growing community of Affiliates will be hugely central to seizing that opportunity, and their increasing numbers are a testament to how seriously the sector is now taking this powerful technology that just months ago was viewed with a dose of skepticism.”
