A rare Bitcoin on-chain signal has emerged, suggesting the cryptocurrency market could be approaching the end of its prolonged downturn despite growing signs of investor capitulation.
CryptoQuant analyst Crypto Dan highlighted a sharp decline in the Bitcoin LTH-SOPR/STH-SOPR ratio, an indicator comparing the profitability of long-term holders with that of short-term investors. The ratio has fallen below the critical 1.0 level, a development that historically appeared during the final stages of major Bitcoin market corrections.
The signal comes as Bitcoin consolidates near $78,400 following an extended decline from previous highs. Even investors who held BTC for years are now increasingly selling at a loss, indicating that confidence among some of the market's most resilient participants has weakened.
When the SOPR ratio falls below 1.0, long-term holders are effectively realizing greater losses relative to their acquisition prices than newer market participants. While such behavior may initially appear bearish, previous Bitcoin cycles suggest widespread capitulation among experienced holders can emerge close to a macro market bottom.
CryptoQuant analysts noted that periods when medium- and long-term Bitcoin holders consistently realize losses have historically created attractive accumulation opportunities. The current environment is particularly notable because this selling pressure is occurring alongside extremely weak public interest in cryptocurrency.
This combination of declining enthusiasm and capitulation among established investors could help remove speculative excess from the market. With casual traders largely absent and panic selling potentially becoming exhausted, additional downward pressure may gradually weaken.
At the same time, larger Bitcoin holders could use lower prices and subdued market activity to accumulate BTC from investors exiting their positions. Historically, this transfer of supply from weaker sellers to stronger buyers has helped establish foundations for longer-term recoveries.
However, the on-chain signal does not guarantee that Bitcoin has already reached its final bottom. Analysts say confirmation would require the SOPR ratio to recover above 1.0 and remain there consistently.
A sustained move above that threshold could indicate that Bitcoin holders are returning to profitability and that the market is becoming capable of supporting higher prices. Until then, the current signal suggests a potential bottoming phase rather than confirmation of a new Bitcoin bull trend.
