British automotive giant Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has unveiled a proof-of-concept (POC) for tracing car energy using distributed ledger technology (DLT).
The POC has been developed in collaboration with the ENGIE Lab CRIGEN, the Research & Development center of French energy operator ENGIE Group, Norwegian real estate company ENTRA, and the IOTA Foundation. It was demonstrated at the opening of ENTRA’s Powerhouse Brattørkaia, a new energy-positive building in Trondheim.
According to the official release, the companies demonstrated how the system enables real-time tracking of energy usage and provenance of Jaguar I-Pace, which has won the ‘2019 World Car of the Year’ title, connected to the building through an electric charger.
“This agile initiative demonstrates vividly how cities can transform both infrastructure and transportation into a sustainable and mutually beneficial ecosystem,” said Russell Vickers, manager, Jaguar Land Rover’s vehicle-as-a-service engineering group. “We are excited to let the public see how energy-positive buildings and vehicles such as the I-Pace in this demonstration can create positive sustainability innovation in line with Jaguar Land Rover's Destination Zero strategy.”
In an online post, Iota said that the system uses Tangle, IOTA’s immutable DLT, to create a tamper-proof record of all transactions and sources. It also leverages ENGIE Lab CRIGEN’s expertise in energy, facility management, and smart city, as well as its capabilities in IOTA, enabled IoT development.
Furthermore, Jaguar I-Pace is equipped with a Smart Wallet developed by Jaguar Land Rover. The wallet uses IOTA’s technology and allows the vehicle to autonomously earn currency for reporting data about potholes, weather conditions, traffic and more. Vehicle owners can use this money to pay for services such as tolls, parking, and charging.
It can be recalled that Jaguar Land Rover partnered with the IOTA Foundation in April this year to test software that enables drivers to earn cryptocurrency for sharing data.
Iota further revealed that they are also testing a “Green Charging” feature in the wallet, which will offer drivers the option to solely charge from renewable energy sources. The feature utilizes IOTA’s DLT to ensure the energy is renewable from the point of origin.
Just recently, Continental also unveiled a new app based on its blockchain-based data-monetization platform (DMP) built in partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). The “Earn as you ride” platform allows drivers to earn credits on the roads with the data generated through the sensors installed on their vehicles.
