UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has rolled out a blockchain-based system that will record and share information of healthcare workers in public and private health facilities under its supervision, Emirates News Agency reported.
As per the report, the system, the first such from the ministry, will be focused on the assessment information of health professionals, including doctors, pharmacists, and technicians with local licensing health authorities. It will help reduce the time and cost, while enhancing efficiency and data integrity.
"The Ministry has successfully developed the necessary infrastructure for a blockchain-based decentralised database. In the first stage, we will link the system of evaluation of health workers with public and private health authorities and other relevant institutions to create a single digital platform with access to the portfolio of health professionals,” Awad Saghir Al Ketbi, Assistant Under-Secretary of the Support Services Sector, said.
He also said that the project is in line with the Emirates Blockchain Strategy 2021, which aims to capitalize on the blockchain technology to transform 50 percent of government transactions into the blockchain platform by 2021.
Emphasizing on the benefits of blockchain technology, Mubaraka Ibrahim, Director of Information Technology at the Ministry, said that the technology will help improve data and information validation and consistency, thereby providing a high level of transparency and trust in the healthcare services sector.
“With immutable data, all health providers can access reliable information and take appropriate decisions, automate workflow processes electronically, improve the experience of customers and employees, and boost operational performance," she added.
Ibrahim revealed that the ministry is also developing e-health services according to the smart government enablers' index. It will involve integrating digital technologies with smart applications, and improving the quality, safety and efficiency of healthcare, by leveraging big data, predictive models and blockchain technologies.
Just recently, the Centre for Fourth Industrial Revolution in the UAE (C4IR UAE) introduced a blockchain accelerator program at its headquarters. The program aims to bring together public and private sector entities, including blockchain experts, specialists from the World Economic Forum (WEF), and different legislative authorities that implement blockchain-based technologies.
