Open source blockchain collaborative project Hyperledger has onboarded 11 new members into its line-up, expanding its enterprise blockchain community.

Hosted by the Linux Foundation, Hyperledger is a multi-venture and multi-stakeholder effort that gathers different enterprise blockchain and distributed ledger technologies. Its members include blue-chip technology companies, international organizations, logistics, manufacturing players, academia and beyond.

The new roster of general members includes Bitfury, Blockforce, Cargill, The Elamachain Foundation, FNZ, Mindtree, Splunk, Truffle Blockchain Group, and Unbound Tech. Meanwhile, the latest associate members are the University of Nicosia and The United Nations International Computing Centre (UNICC).

General members of Hyperledger are required to pay dues based on their size to the consortium and develop applications using the technology. Associate members, on the other hand, are not obliged to pay dues and may include non-profits, open-source projects, and government entities.

It’s rewarding to see our projects are now powering hundreds of production networks, and we are going deeper into enterprises and wider with our developments every day. The newest members add even more depth and breadth to our community, which is the driving force behind our mission of advancing open source enterprise blockchain adoption,” Brian Behlendorf, Hyperledger Director, said.

Notably, the highest-profile is Cargill, which is the world’s largest agribusiness with a reported estimated 2018 revenue of $115 billion.

An open-first technology principle and industry consortia are the tools that will help global food and agricultural companies embrace digital to feed the world. The Hyperledger community provides all of us access to the best thinking to help accelerate technology solutions, transform supply chains and address the world's urgent food challenges,” Justin Kershaw, Cargill’s Chief Information Officer, said, expressing his excitement that the company is now a formal member of the consortium.

Other than welcoming its latest members, the umbrella project also recently added a 14th project called Hyperledger Transact, which aims to provide a standard interface for executing smart contracts that is separate from the distributed ledger implementation.

Meanwhile, Hyperledger made the announcement at the two-day Hyperledger Member Summit on July 30 to 31, 2019, in Tokyo, Japan.

Last month, Hyperledger has also welcomed eight new members including Ethereum Foundation, Microsoft, Nornickel, Salesforce, Gloscad, Milligan Partners, GS1 US, and China Academy of Information and Communication Technology.
