LG CNS to bring blockchain technology to South Korean school cafeterias

LG CNS, a subsidiary of electronics giant LG Corporation, is planning to develop a blockchain platform to help consumers unlock key information about food products across the value chain, ZDNet reported.

Based on Monachain, the platform will be developed in collaboration with IT service provider SayIT.

In May 2018, LG CNS launched Monachain – an enterprise blockchain platform that can be applied across industries from finance to public sector, communication, manufacturing, and beyond.

The new blockchain-based food distribution platform will be implemented in South Korean school cafeterias. The rollout will be carried out in collaboration with regional governments that will provide information on agricultural products.

Information on the production, processing, distribution, acquisition, and consumption of these products would be saved and made available to the public.

LG CNS said that this enhanced transparency would enable parents to protect the health of their children. Food producers, on the other hand, would be able to leverage the platform to promote their goods via “mobile flyers.”

The company is also reportedly developing another blockchain-based platform aimed at recycling batteries used in electric cars at Jeju Island. The platform will trace the information related to car batteries such as specifications, production dates, inspection history, and distribution, allowing users to measure how much battery life is left for effective recycling.
