It was recently announced that Walmart China will be implementing a new blockchain initiative that is intended to keep track of items that will become available on its shelves in the near future. Many of these are food items, and customers will be able to track their provenance on the VeChainThor blockchain.

In a press release, it was noted that there are now 23 product lines that have been tested and ready to be tracked via the blockchain platform called the Walmart China Blockchain Traceability Platform. Walmart China is planning on adding another 100 product lines, many of which will include food products.

VeChain Chief Operating Officer, Kevin Feng noted how important this development is for Walmart and the retail industry more generally. He placed particular emphasis on the significance of this partnership on the role blockchain can play in commerce.

“The launch of the Blockchain Traceability Platform by Walmart China, the world-class retail giant, is of great significance to the commercial application of blockchain technology. VeChain will work with Walmart China to actively take heed of the call of the government, by utilizing technology to promote the traceability of fresh food, and to provide innovative solutions for the traceability platform through digital technology, so as to generate more transparent and reassuring consumption experience," he said.

Walmart China Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Shi Jiaqi concurred, adding what the retail giant has in mind for the platform. As it stands, the chain is intent on using the transparency that comes with blockchain to give consumers more confidence when shopping.

“We use digital methods to improve efficiency and transparency, providing products and services of quality to customers and making life better for busy families in China."
