Crypto users in Pakistan have banded together to try to reinstate a government adviser back to his post. The country’s digital currency users have started a campaign on social media to convince Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to bring back his science and information technology advisor Zia Ullah Bangash.

Bangash announced on Saturday that he will be resigning from his post as Mahmood Khan’s science and information technology advisor, according to Cointelegraph. Khan, who is the chief minister of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has not yet officially accepted Bangash’s resignation.

Bangash did not specify the reason for his decision to leave his post. “Submitted my resignation from his post of Advisor to CM KP,” Bangash posted on Twitter on Saturday. “Some unavoidable circumstances in my constituency have forced me to take this step. I have a lot of responsibilities and I want to keep up to expectations of people of my constituency & reserve my entire attention for them.”

Some speculate that local mafia groups might have pressured Bangash to resign in an attempt at preventing Pakistan from promoting innovative technology. Bangash is known as being pro-crypto and a proponent for blockchain technology.

One of these is crypto advocate Waqar Zaka who helped set up a committee to create a cryptocurrency policy. “Person who worked hard for crypto mining and facebook Monetization is out, @ImranKhanPTI why? Anyone working for IT industry is taken down by mafia,” Zaka wrote on Twitter.

Bagash’s sudden departure created a storm on Twitter as crypto users expressed their desire to bring back one of the country’s crypto and blockchain proponents. Within hours of his announcement, the hashtag “WeWantZiaBangashBack” trended in Pakistan with more than 23,900 tweets. Some Twitter users even threatened not to vote for PM Imran Khan in the coming 2023 election.

.“[Zia Bangash was the] only person who helped to get crypto back to our country,” Twitter user Yasen Ali said. “We want Zia Bangash back. @ImranKhanPTI Bring him or we won’t vote you next time.”

“He is the only one in politics who understands the crypto and technology,” Asad Shah said. Shah also tagged the PM’s Twitter account on his post.

As a crypto advocate and the technology advisor, Bangash regularly tweets on recent developments that might affect crypto’s regulation. His latest tweet prior to his resignation was on about Reza Baqir, the governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, who spoke to CNN about the country’s ongoing study on the issuance of its own CBDC.
