Cardano Gains Native Support in Coinbase’s x402 Payments Protocol

Cardano Gains Native Support in Coinbase’s x402 Payments Protocol.

Cardano has secured a notable payments integration with native support added to the official x402 codebase, giving developers and AI agents a standardized way to use the blockchain for internet-based payments.

The implementation was contributed by Cardano Foundation engineers and brings Cardano directly into x402’s reference tooling. Developers building applications around the open payments protocol can now access Cardano using infrastructure similar to that available for other supported blockchain networks.

The integration provides client, server and facilitator components alongside working examples. It supports Cardano mainnet as well as the preprod and preview environments, making it easier for developers to test applications before deploying them publicly.

Originally developed by Coinbase, x402 is an open payment protocol built around HTTP’s “402 Payment Required” status code. It enables websites, applications and autonomous AI agents to request and complete payments directly over the internet.

The technology could be particularly useful for AI agents that need to independently purchase API access, data, computing power or other digital services without relying on traditional checkout systems.

Cardano-based x402 payments were previously available through third-party projects such as Masumi. However, incorporating Cardano into the official x402 codebase removes the need for developers to build or adopt a separate implementation, potentially lowering barriers to using Cardano as a settlement network.

Native x402 support could also increase Cardano’s role in multi-chain payment applications. Because the protocol is designed to remain network- and currency-agnostic, developers can integrate multiple blockchain payment options while maintaining a common HTTP-based transaction flow.

The development comes as the x402 ecosystem attracts growing interest from major technology, cryptocurrency and payments companies. The x402 Foundation launched in July with support from dozens of organizations, including Amazon Web Services, American Express, Circle, Coinbase, Google, Mastercard, Ripple, Shopify, Solana Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, Stripe and Visa.

For Cardano, the integration broadens its potential payment infrastructure and could make ADA and Cardano-based assets more accessible to developers building AI-driven and machine-to-machine payment applications.
