Cardano ADA Remains 93% Below Record High. Source: Shutterstock

Cardano (ADA) remains far below its historic peak five years after reaching an all-time high, even as new network upgrades and integrations offer potential catalysts for the cryptocurrency.

CoinGecko noted in a recent X post that ADA last hit its record price of $3.09 on September 2, 2021. The milestone came shortly before Cardano activated the Alonzo upgrade, which introduced native smart contract functionality through the Plutus platform on September 12, 2021.

At the time of writing, Cardano was trading around $0.21, leaving ADA approximately 93.19% below its all-time high. From its current price, the cryptocurrency would need to surge roughly 1,371% to return to $3.09. Although ADA has experienced several rallies since 2021, none has come close to challenging its previous record.

Attention is now turning to Cardano's next phase of development. The blockchain will celebrate the anniversary of its network launch on September 23, marking the genesis block minted in 2017.

Cardano's original roadmap consisted of five major development eras: Byron, Shelley, Goguen, Basho and Voltaire. With on-chain governance now deployed, the blockchain is progressing into the Dijkstra era, which focuses on further technological improvements and scalability.

Recent developments could also strengthen Cardano's ecosystem. ADA has received a working integration into the official x402 codebase, enabling x402 payments across Cardano mainnet, preprod and preview testnet. The implementation is also available through official x402 packages in multiple programming languages.

Meanwhile, decentralized exchange SundaeSwap plans to launch its v4 protocol on Cardano mainnet on October 1. The upgrade will introduce modular pools, automated routing, concentrated liquidity, multi-asset pools, custom vaults and partial fills.

Cardano's Ouroboros Leios scaling upgrade is also reportedly 96% ready to demonstrate throughput of 1,000 transactions per second. The upgrade is expected to reach Cardano mainnet later this year.

With ADA still more than 90% below its record price, investors are watching whether these ecosystem upgrades can revive demand and eventually help Cardano narrow the gap to its 2021 all-time high.
