Starbucks is now incorporating non-fungible tokens into its rewards program. Called the Starbucks Odyssey, it is an extension of the company’s rewards program that allows its members in the U.S. to earn and buy digital collectible stamps in the form of NFTs. The more stamps a member collects means the more points can be used to unlock access to unique experiences.
“New Starbucks Odyssey experience will offer members the ability to earn and buy digital collectible stamps (NFTs) that will unlock access to new, immersive coffee experiences,” Starbucks wrote in a blog post. “As one of the first companies to integrate NFTs with an industry-leading loyalty program at scale, Starbucks will create an accessible Web3 community that will enable new ways to engage with members and partners (employees).”
Members of the iconic coffee chain’s rewards program can just use their Starbucks Rewards login credentials to engage in Starbucks Odyssey “journeys,” which is a series of fun activities that include challenges and interactive games. Completing the journeys will earn members a digital collectible “journey stamp” (NFT).
Members can also opt to buy “limited-edition stamps” (NFTs) via the app, which can be paid for with a credit card. These NFTs will have a point value based on their rarity and these digital collectibles can be bought and sold by members within the marketplace. Members don’t need to own crypto wallets to access their collectibles.
Members will earn points by collecting these stamps, which can then be used to unlock certain experiences and benefits. “These experiences could range from a virtual espresso martini-making class, to access to unique merchandise and artist collaborations, to invitations to exclusive events at Starbucks Reserve Roasteries or even trips to Starbucks Hacienda Alsacia coffee farm in Costa Rica,” the company said.
Customers who wish to be among the first to explore the experience can already sign up for the waitlist at https://waitlist.starbucks.com/. The company said that a portion of the proceeds of the sale of the limited-edition stamps will be donated.
