Rune Christensen, MakerDAO's co-founder, proposes building the project's final upgrade, NewChain, on Solana’s architecture instead of Ethereum's.

Rune Christensen, a founding figure at MakerDAO, has put forth a striking proposal suggesting that the decentralized finance initiative's forthcoming independent blockchain, known as NewChain, should be constructed using Solana's programming framework rather than Ethereum's Virtual Machine (EVM). MakerDAO has a history of collaboration with Ethereum.

Scheduled to span approximately three years, the last leg of MakerDAO's so-called "Endgame" upgrade has NewChain as its cornerstone. This final chapter intends to fully reincorporate the Maker protocol into a dedicated, autonomous blockchain.

On September 1, via a post on the platform formerly known as Twitter, Christensen revealed his rationale for favoring Solana's programming architecture for the project's next evolution. In the MakerDAO discussion forum, he further elaborated that Solana's coding framework presented the most viable alternative for NewChain’s foundational layer.

In advocating for Solana, Christensen cited three compelling reasons. First, he praised the intrinsic technical merits of Solana's architecture, which he views as fine-tuned for running a single, performance-optimized blockchain. According to Christensen, Solana's structure takes into account the lessons learned from past blockchain challenges, making it a good fit for NewChain, which aims to resolve MakerDAO's existing technical shortcomings.

Second, he pointed to Solana's demonstrated resilience, having navigated through significant hurdles like the FTX market disruption without faltering. Consequently, Christensen believes Solana offers a stable ecosystem that could provide MakerDAO with a rich source of skilled talent while also serving as a financially prudent solution for developing and sustaining NewChain.

Third, Christensen observed that there are established instances where Solana's code has been successfully bifurcated and repurposed for application-specific blockchains. This makes the process of developing NewChain less fraught with uncertainty, he said.In response to questions about his preference for Solana over the EVM, Christensen conceded that while Ethereum remains a crucial platform for user-facing applications, it falls short in meeting the backend needs specific to MakerDAO.
