CBS Studios Secures "Star Trek" Trademark for NFTs Linked to Continuum Series

CBS Studios has successfully obtained a trademark for the name "Star Trek" in order to develop and trade non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and related digital collectibles. These NFTs will be associated with their Continuum series.

According to recent records from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the Star Trek trademark was officially registered on August 8, following CBS's application in April. This trademark covers not only digital crypto collectibles on online platforms but also NFT-authenticated video clips.

Star Trek Continuum is not a new TV series but rather a collection of NFTs that will feature a variety of starships from the extensive and beloved science fiction franchise. These digital collectibles can be customized to suit the preferences of their owners, providing a unique offering for fans.

Securing trademarks, particularly in the blockchain and crypto space, can be a complex process. In 2022, over 6,000 companies sought NFT trademarks, a significant increase from the roughly 2,000 applications in 2021, underscoring the growing interest in the crypto world.

The sprawling narratives of Star Trek, spanning from the 22nd to the 25th century, have captivated and inspired countless fans, including those within the crypto community. Notably, William Shatner, famed for his role as Captain James T. Kirk in the 1960s, remains active even at 92 years of age. His recent participation in the 2023 Consensus conference and his scheduled appearance in 2024 further demonstrate Star Trek's enduring connection with its audience.

NFTs represent distinctive digital assets verified on a blockchain. People invest in them for their exclusivity, potential returns, and digital ownership rights over art and collectibles.
