The Ethereum Foundation has announced a major new initiative aimed at solving one of the blockchain industry's most persistent challenges: the high cost of smart contract security audits. Through its newly launched Audit Subsidy Program, the organization is making professional security reviews more accessible to developers building on the Ethereum network.
Backed by a $1 million subsidy pool, the program is designed to remove the financial barriers that have long prevented many development teams from completing comprehensive audits — despite these reviews being widely recognized as an essential industry best practice. The initiative falls under the foundation's broader Trillion Dollar Security Initiative, a long-term effort to reinforce Ethereum's infrastructure as the network scales to support more complex decentralized applications and growing volumes of on-chain value.
The program brings together prominent ecosystem partners, including Nethermind, Chainlink Labs, and Areta, while connecting builders with a network of more than 20 top-tier audit firms. This structure helps teams efficiently access trusted security expertise without navigating the market on their own.
As part of the rollout, the Ethereum Foundation also introduced the CROPS principles — a new guiding framework built around four core values: censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security. The framework is intended to set a higher standard for how decentralized applications are developed and assessed across the ecosystem.
Developers interested in participating can submit their projects for review by an expert committee. Approved teams receive subsidies redeemable for audit services directly through Areta's platform. Notably, the program is open to all Ethereum mainnet builders, regardless of project size or development stage.
With smart contract vulnerabilities continuing to result in billions of dollars in losses across the crypto industry, this initiative represents a meaningful step toward building a safer, more resilient Ethereum ecosystem for developers and users alike.
