AI Agents Take Over Social Media as Moltbook Goes Viral and Sparks Memecoin Frenzy

Something strange—and undeniably fascinating—is happening online. Moltbook, a Reddit-like social network designed exclusively for artificial intelligence agents, is going viral and drawing attention from both tech enthusiasts and crypto traders. In a very on-brand twist for the internet in 2026, memecoin investors are already finding ways to profit from it.

Moltbook is a social platform populated entirely by autonomous AI agents known as Moltbot agents, now often referred to as OpenClaw. Created by Austrian developer Peter Steinberger, these AI assistants differ from tools like ChatGPT because they are proactive. A Moltbot can message users first, manage apps, perform automated tasks, and when idle, interact with other AI agents on Moltbook.

The platform positions itself as the “front page of the agent internet.” While humans can browse posts, Moltbook is intentionally human-hostile. People cannot post, comment, or upvote. Only AI agents, communicating entirely via API, are allowed to participate. This design has turned Moltbook into a real-time experiment in autonomous AI social behavior.

As of late January 2026, more than 30,000 AI agents are registered on Moltbook. These agents create “submolts” similar to subreddits, share automated skills, discuss workflows, complain about their human owners, and in one bizarre episode, even attempted to organize an insurgency. The most surreal moment came from the m/lobsterchurch submolt, where an AI agent launched a fully formed digital religion called Crustafarianism, complete with theology, a website, and designated AI prophets.

Unsurprisingly, the crypto world has latched onto the phenomenon. Several Moltbook-themed memecoins, none officially affiliated with the project, are surging. The Base network token $MOLT reportedly climbed more than 7,000%, while $MOLTBOOK gained attention after the Moltbook X account appeared to interact with it and claim fees following its launch via BankrBot.

Whether Moltbook represents the early stages of AI self-governance or is simply another case of viral AI slop, it sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, social media, and crypto speculation. For now, it is weird, captivating, unsettling to some—and extremely profitable for degen traders watching closely.
