Cardano has been integrated into the official x402 SDK, allowing applications and AI agents to make web-based payments using ADA and Cardano Native Tokens (CNTs), according to a major update from the Cardano Foundation.
The foundation announced the integration on X, saying apps and autonomous AI agents can now pay for API calls with ADA or any CNT directly through web requests. The system eliminates the need for traditional payment steps such as creating an account, obtaining an API key, or navigating a checkout page.
Services already supporting x402 can also enable Cardano payments, potentially expanding ADA’s utility across the emerging AI agent economy.
x402 is an open HTTP payment standard originally developed by Coinbase and now stewarded by the Linux Foundation. It revives the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code to enable applications and AI agents to automatically pay for online services on a per-request basis.
The Cardano Foundation joined the x402 initiative as an Associate Member under the Linux Foundation in July 2026. Other participants include major technology and payments companies such as Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google, AWS, and Coinbase.
Cardano previously revealed in September that its x402 support had moved beyond a technical specification and was available as working code. The payment functionality was merged into the x402 repository with client, server, facilitator, and end-to-end examples.
The x402 integration adds to several recent Cardano developments. The Cardano Foundation also joined Mastercard’s Crypto Partner Program under its Blockchains track, supporting collaboration in areas including stablecoins, cross-border payments, business-to-business transactions, and settlement.
Meanwhile, Cardano developers continue working on network scalability through Ouroboros Leios. Recent demonstrations showed a Leios node reaching 250 TxkB/s, equivalent to roughly 1,000 simple Cardano transactions per second. By comparison, Cardano mainnet currently reaches about 4.5 TxkB/s.
Together, the x402 integration, payments partnerships, and scalability efforts highlight Cardano’s push to expand ADA and CNT utility across AI-driven payments and blockchain-based financial infrastructure.
