Bitcoin Reclaims Momentum as Gold Investors Make Their Return

Fidelity Investments' Director of Global Macro, Jurrien Timmer, says exchange-traded product flows are sending a clear signal — investors who walked away from Bitcoin in late 2025 are coming back. The data tells a compelling story of shifting sentiment between two of the world's most watched stores of value.

When Bitcoin surged past $124,000 last October, many investors locked in gains and pivoted toward gold, which was riding strong momentum of its own. That capital rotation has now reversed course. As gold has lost some of its shine and Bitcoin stabilizes, money is flowing back into the leading cryptocurrency. Timmer summed it up plainly, noting that the two assets have essentially swapped behavioral roles — gold has begun moving the way Bitcoin used to, and Bitcoin is now exhibiting the steadier characteristics once associated with gold.

Bitcoin's pullback from its all-time high to around $60,000 was steep, but Timmer frames it as nothing more than a "mild winter." The asset has since found a foothold in the $65,000–$70,000 range, building a base that technical analysts see as a healthy consolidation before a potential next leg upward. Supporting this view are multiple indicators — prior resistance levels now acting as support, a recovering Bitcoin-to-gold ratio, and Bitcoin's position relative to its long-term power law curve.

Gold's recent underperformance has raised eyebrows, particularly given the elevated level of global uncertainty. Timmer attributes the weakness to profit-taking by short-term traders and forced reserve liquidations by some nations facing geopolitical pressure. Despite this, he remains bullish on gold over the long term, calling current price levels a reasonable accumulation opportunity.

For investors watching both assets, the takeaway is nuanced — Bitcoin appears to be regaining its footing, while gold, though temporarily softened, still holds long-term value in a diversified portfolio.
