The cryptocurrency sector is experiencing a significant wave of job cuts as companies navigate a turbulent economic climate, falling token prices, and a broader push toward artificial intelligence integration. The Algorand Foundation recently became the latest casualty, cutting 25% of its workforce — fewer than 200 employees — attributing the decision to global macroeconomic uncertainty and a prolonged crypto market downturn.

This round of layoffs follows similar moves from other major players in the space. Gemini initially announced the elimination of roughly 200 positions, approximately 25% of its staff, a figure that later climbed to 30%. Crypto.com followed suit, trimming around 180 roles, or 12% of its workforce. Smaller operations weren't spared either — OP Labs, the team behind the Optimism layer-2 blockchain, cut 20 employees, while PIP Labs reduced headcount by 10%, letting go of five full-time staff and three contractors. Crypto analytics firm Messari disclosed its third round of layoffs since 2023, coinciding with a leadership change, though exact numbers were not released.

While many companies framed these decisions as part of an AI-driven efficiency push, industry recruiters offer a more grounded explanation. According to crypto recruitment specialist Dan Escow of Up Top, entire verticals — including restaking, DePIN, and layer-2 networks — that were once talent-rich have effectively collapsed, forcing companies into cost-cutting mode. New job postings across major crypto job boards dropped approximately 80% year-over-year as of January, averaging just 6.5 listings per day.

Collectively, the firms mentioned have announced roughly 450 job losses in a matter of weeks. If history is any guide, this could be just the beginning — during the 2022 crypto winter, more than 26,000 positions were eliminated industry-wide over the course of a single year.
