Solana is approaching another major network performance milestone, with its 250-millisecond slot upgrade expected to go live on mainnet on September 18 as the blockchain moves closer to its ultimate 200ms target.

Solana-focused software developer Anza said the 250ms slot feature is currently pending activation on mainnet-beta. Under the SIMD-0525 rollout process, features generally become effective one epoch after activation. Based on the current schedule, the 250ms slot time is expected to take effect at the epoch 1037 boundary at approximately 05:01 UTC on September 18.

The feature is set to await activation at epoch 1035, become active at epoch 1036 and fully go live during epoch 1037.

The Solana speed upgrade is part of a gradual effort to cut slot times from 400ms to 200ms. The planned progression follows five stages: 400ms, 350ms, 300ms, 250ms and eventually 200ms. The initiative was initially discussed under SIMD Discussion 469 before being formally proposed and approved through SIMD-0525.

Each 50ms reduction has a separate feature gate, allowing Solana core developers to monitor network performance before advancing to the next stage. The 350ms and 300ms slot reductions are already operational on Solana mainnet, while the 250ms and 200ms features have been activated on devnet and testnet.

A date for the final 200ms mainnet activation has not yet been determined.

Faster slot times allow Solana to produce more blocks within the same period, potentially improving transaction confirmation speeds and overall blockchain performance. At 200ms, Solana would generate twice as many blocks per day compared with its previous 400ms slot time.

The upgrade could also benefit market makers by enabling tighter spreads and reducing latency. Validators will experience shorter epochs as well. With each Solana epoch fixed at 432,000 slots, an epoch takes about 36 hours at 300ms, compared with roughly 48 hours at 400ms. Once 200ms slots are implemented, that duration is expected to fall to around 24 hours.
