The Cardano Foundation has joined Mastercard’s Crypto Partner Program, marking a significant step toward expanding Cardano’s role in blockchain-based payments and global financial infrastructure.
Through the program’s Blockchains track, the Cardano Foundation will collaborate with Mastercard and other participants focused on payments and stablecoins. Key areas include cross-border payments, business-to-business transactions and settlement solutions.
The Foundation described the partnership as another important milestone in connecting public blockchain technology with the infrastructure used to move money worldwide.
Cardano is also making progress in the emerging AI agent economy. Through Masumi, Cardano has been officially integrated into the x402 repository and its packages, allowing artificial intelligence agents to conduct transactions using the blockchain more easily.
The integration brings x402 payments to Cardano and supports the network’s mainnet as well as its preprod and preview testnets. The development aligns with Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson’s broader vision for “agentic finance,” where AI agents could increasingly interact with blockchain-based identity, privacy and payment systems.
At the 2026 Wyoming Blockchain Symposium, Hoskinson discussed how the convergence of artificial intelligence, blockchain, privacy and digital finance could help bring more users into the cryptocurrency ecosystem. He argued that blockchain networks could provide essential payment, identity and control layers for autonomous AI systems.
Meanwhile, Cardano developers are reporting substantial progress on Leios, a major scaling upgrade designed to increase network throughput.
Developers are preparing to demonstrate a Leios node reaching 250 TxkB/s, equivalent to roughly 1,000 simple 250-byte transactions per second, in a local testing environment with simulated network latency. Cardano’s mainnet currently reaches about 4.5 TxkB/s.
Hoskinson has expressed optimism about Leios potentially reaching the Cardano mainnet by the end of 2026. Input Output Product Manager Carlos Lopez de Lara said throughput has already been demonstrated, with remaining work focused on optimizing the network stack for real-world internet conditions.
