Citadel Acquires Leveraged AI Equity Positions From Situational Awareness Amid Margin Pressure

Citadel acquired debt-backed equity positions from AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness after heavy losses and margin calls forced a rapid deleveraging of its portfolio.

AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness has reportedly offloaded a significant portion of its listed equity portfolio to Citadel after suffering heavy losses and facing margin calls—an episode that underscores how quickly leverage can unravel in today’s increasingly volatile artificial intelligence trade.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday ET, citing people familiar with the matter, that Citadel acquired positions tied to borrowed financing, while assets purchased with investor capital remain with Situational Awareness. The structure suggests the transaction is less a discretionary portfolio reshuffle than a liquidity-driven effort to unwind leveraged exposure and reduce near-term funding pressure.

Situational Awareness was founded in 2024 in San Francisco by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher. The fund rose to prominence by making aggressive early bets on companies expected to benefit from AI adoption—spanning semiconductors, power, infrastructure, and select AI startups. During the height of the AI-linked equity rally, the firm’s assets under management reportedly climbed above $20 billion in a little more than two years, reflecting strong inflows and rapid scaling.

More recently, the fund had been associated with large-ticket interest in SK Hynix’s U.S. depositary receipt (ADR) plans. Earlier reporting by the Financial Times said Situational Awareness, alongside investors such as Baillie Gifford and Coatue Management, had indicated intent to invest up to $7 billion in the SK Hynix ADR offering. The Wall Street Journal also listed SK Hynix, SanDisk, Bloom Energy, and Nebius among the fund’s public equity holdings.

The immediate catalyst appears to have been a sharp increase in volatility across AI-related equities. When prices move quickly against leveraged positions, a drop in collateral value can trigger additional margin requirements—forcing funds to sell assets, re-finance, or transfer positions to stabilize their balance sheets. By taking over only the debt-funded portion of the portfolio, Citadel effectively assumed positions most exposed to financing terms and margin dynamics, while Situational Awareness retained holdings backed by investors’ equity.

Market participants see the situation as a cautionary example of how concentrated thematic investing—particularly when paired with leverage—can magnify drawdowns during a correction, even if the larger AI narrative remains intact. The episode is likely to sharpen scrutiny of risk controls across funds crowded into AI beneficiaries, and could accelerate a broader ‘sorting’ within AI-linked assets as investors distinguish between durable cash-flow stories and momentum-driven trades.
