Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson is increasingly positioning artificial intelligence as a critical component of the blockchain network’s future, particularly as development of Midnight City advances. According to Hoskinson, AI agents will play a central role in how blockchain ecosystems communicate, scale, and manage growing communities.

His comments come after criticism surrounding a synthetic AI influencer featured on Input Output’s official social media channels. While some community members questioned the experiment, Hoskinson defended it as a transparent demonstration of emerging AI capabilities. Rather than presenting polished marketing campaigns, he argued that the goal is to openly showcase how autonomous AI tools can operate within a blockchain ecosystem.

Hoskinson also highlighted OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent project that has experienced rapid growth. He believes the increasing adoption of AI-powered systems signals a major shift in how crypto projects engage with users. As blockchain communities expand from thousands to potentially millions of participants, traditional communication models become difficult to sustain. AI agents, he argues, can automate reporting, moderation, community management, and content distribution across multiple platforms.

Looking ahead, Hoskinson envisions advanced AI-driven marketing systems, including virtual brand representatives and intelligent communication networks capable of delivering updates in real time. He believes these technologies will fundamentally transform how blockchain projects attract and retain users.

Midnight City serves as a practical showcase for this vision. Built on the Midnight Network, the platform features autonomous AI characters capable of interacting, conducting transactions, and making decisions based on unique memories and behavioral traits. The project is designed to demonstrate how AI agents can function within a privacy-focused blockchain environment.

Users can explore Midnight City through multiple viewing modes. A standard view displays publicly available blockchain data, while an auditor mode provides access to selectively disclosed information for authorized participants. Another advanced mode reveals an AI agent’s internal memory, objectives, and activity history, helping users better understand privacy-preserving technologies and selective disclosure mechanisms.

The underlying infrastructure combines zero-knowledge proofs, Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), and cryptographic verification to support scalable, privacy-focused transactions. Hoskinson believes the combination of AI agents, privacy-preserving computation, and decentralized networks could attract millions of new users.

As blockchain technology continues to evolve, Midnight City represents Cardano’s effort to merge artificial intelligence, privacy, and decentralized systems into a single ecosystem. For Hoskinson, AI agents are no longer experimental tools but essential infrastructure that could shape the next generation of blockchain adoption.
