Bitcoin (BTC) could be approaching a closely watched “golden cross,” a technical indicator often associated with strengthening long-term bullish momentum in the cryptocurrency market.
The potential Bitcoin golden cross would occur if BTC’s 50-day simple moving average (SMA), currently around $63,976, continues climbing and crosses above the 200-day SMA at approximately $69,005. For the technical pattern to develop, both moving averages generally need to be trending in the same direction.
Bitcoin is currently trading above $71,000 after gaining more than 12% over the past week. The rally has also pushed BTC slightly above its 200-day SMA, an important level used by traders to assess the cryptocurrency’s broader market trend.
The 200-day SMA represents Bitcoin’s average closing price over the previous 200 trading days. A sustained Bitcoin price move above this level is often viewed as evidence that bearish momentum is weakening and a longer-term bullish trend could be developing. Conversely, falling back below the indicator may suggest continued market weakness.
BTC had remained below its 200-day SMA since October 2025, when Bitcoin traded near $110,000. Its extended period beneath the indicator reflected the broader downtrend that followed.
Historically, Bitcoin prices have often begun rising before a golden cross is officially confirmed, meaning traders waiting for the crossover can miss part of the initial rally. Previous Bitcoin golden crosses occurred in February 2023, October 2023, October 2024 and April 2025. Each was followed by additional gains in BTC.
Still, the bullish Bitcoin outlook is not guaranteed. The latest recovery could prove to be a relief rally rather than the beginning of a sustained bull market.
Bitcoin’s ability to remain above its 200-day SMA will therefore be an important signal for traders. A decisive drop back below the level could weaken the golden cross setup and challenge expectations that BTC’s longer-term market trend has shifted bullish.
