Autonomous AI agents have gained the ability to conduct native payments on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), accepting both XRP and Ripple USD (RLUSD) as payment methods. This capability is powered by t54's x402 facilitator, a protocol originally launched by Coinbase and Cloudflare in 2025 as an open standard designed specifically for machine-native financial transactions.
The announcement highlights a growing convergence between artificial intelligence and blockchain technology. According to t54, AI agents operating through Virtuals.io can now transact autonomously on the XRPL, with features including escrowed job payments, verification through evaluators, and programmable settlement logic — creating a structured framework for what the company calls "agent commerce."
t54, headquartered in San Francisco and founded by Chandler Fang, focuses on building trust infrastructure for the emerging agentic economy. In February, the startup secured a $5 million seed round co-led by Anagram, PL Capital, and Franklin Templeton. Ripple participated as a strategic investor, joining Virtuals Ventures, Blockchain Coinvestors, and ABCDE — a lineup that signals strong institutional confidence in the project's direction.
From a market perspective, XRP continues to navigate volatility, recently trading around $1.45 after declining over 1% within a single day. While short-term price movements reflect broader crypto market pressures, the longer-term narrative around XRP could shift meaningfully if agent commerce gains real traction on the ledger.
The integration gives XRP a compelling use case at the intersection of AI and decentralized finance. If autonomous systems increasingly rely on XRPL for payments and settlement, it could drive sustained on-chain activity and strengthen XRP's fundamental value proposition.
