Coinbase shares are once again benefiting from Bitcoin’s strong rally, highlighting the close but imperfect relationship between COIN stock and the world’s largest cryptocurrency.

Unlike Strategy (MSTR), Coinbase does not primarily gain Bitcoin exposure by holding large amounts of the cryptocurrency on its balance sheet. Instead, the crypto exchange generates much of its revenue from trading activity and transaction fees. As Bitcoin prices rise and investor activity increases, Coinbase can benefit from higher trading volumes.

However, COIN stock does not move in lockstep with Bitcoin. Data from portfolio analytics platform PortfoliosLab shows the long-term correlation between Coinbase shares and Bitcoin at about 0.61, indicating a moderate relationship.

The bigger difference is volatility. Coinbase stock has historically experienced significantly larger price swings than Bitcoin, with long-term volatility estimated at roughly 20%, compared with about 8.5% for BTC.

That amplified behavior has been visible during the latest crypto market rally. In mid-August, Coinbase shares jumped around 9.5% in one session before gaining another 8% the following day as Bitcoin broke above $70,000.

Bitcoin has since extended its rally toward $80,000. Coinbase shares traded between $174.73 and $189.27 on Tuesday, representing an intraday swing of more than 8%. COIN has gained approximately 16% this month as rising cryptocurrency prices boosted sentiment toward crypto-related stocks.

The relationship can also magnify losses during market downturns. Market data provider Kaiko reported in early August that Coinbase stock had fallen roughly 36% for the year at that point, compared with a decline of about 27% for Bitcoin over the same period.

Coinbase has continued expanding beyond its traditional trading business, but Bitcoin prices and broader crypto trading activity remain major forces influencing its stock performance.

For investors, the recent rally reinforces a familiar pattern: when Bitcoin climbs, Coinbase shares can move even faster. But the higher volatility means COIN can also suffer substantially larger declines when crypto market momentum reverses.
