El Salvador, led by President Nayib Bukele, is taking another bold technological step as it teams up with Elon Musk’s xAI to create the world’s first nationwide AI-powered public education system. Already known as the first country to adopt bitcoin as legal tender, El Salvador is now positioning itself as an emerging hub for artificial intelligence innovation.
According to the government’s announcement, xAI’s Grok chatbot will be introduced across more than 5,000 public schools over the next two years. The rollout is expected to support over one million students and thousands of teachers, offering them personalized learning assistance. Grok will function as an adaptive digital tutor, providing lessons tailored to each student’s pace, skill level, and individual needs, while remaining aligned with the national curriculum. The initiative aims to narrow educational gaps by ensuring that both urban and rural communities receive equal access to high-quality instruction.
Beyond improving classroom learning, the partnership will also drive the development of new AI datasets, training frameworks, and methodologies specifically designed for educational environments. xAI emphasized that these tools will prioritize safety, local relevance, and human-centered design, contributing to global standards for responsible AI use in schools.
President Bukele—whose administration recently expanded the nation’s bitcoin reserves to 7,500 BTC—highlighted that El Salvador is “pioneering AI-driven education.” Elon Musk echoed this enthusiasm, stating that the country is actively shaping the future of learning rather than waiting for it.
By merging advanced AI technologies with public education, El Salvador aims to transform how students learn and teachers teach while positioning itself as a leader in both digital innovation and the global AI landscape.
