Investment platform Republic has announced plans to tokenize shares of Animoca Brands, a prominent blockchain venture capital firm, on the Solana (SOL) blockchain. The initiative is designed to expand investor access by transforming Animoca’s private equity shares into blockchain-based tokens. These tokens will represent ownership in Animoca Brands and can be stored in crypto wallets or traded through Republic’s marketplace.

Animoca Brands, best known for investing in over 600 blockchain startups and Web3 projects, remains privately held with shares usually available only through limited over-the-counter deals. Republic’s tokenization effort aims to democratize investment opportunities, giving a wider global audience the ability to gain exposure to the company without waiting for a traditional IPO.

Yat Siu, co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands, emphasized that tokenization aligns with the firm’s Web3 vision, offering innovative ways for investors to hold and trade equity. The move underscores the growing trend of tokenizing traditional financial assets, such as equity and real estate, on blockchain networks to increase liquidity and accessibility.

While the tokenization of private equity is gaining traction, concerns persist around issues such as shareholder rights, regulatory compliance, and market fragmentation. Republic has stated that Animoca’s equity tokens will adhere to current regulatory requirements, with details on token pricing and launch timelines expected to be disclosed later.

The Solana Foundation also voiced strong support. Lily Liu, president of the foundation, described the initiative as “a glimpse of the future,” where retail investors worldwide can engage in opportunities historically restricted to institutional players, while companies tap into broader liquidity and distribution channels.

By merging private equity with blockchain technology, this development could mark a significant step forward in expanding global investor participation in high-growth tech companies.
