Musk Backs Telegram CEO Amid Arrest Controversy
Elon Musk, the tech billionaire, has spoken out in defense of Pavel Durov, the CEO of Telegram, who was arrested in France on Saturday. Musk praised Durov for standing up for free expression and refusing to give in to the government's attempts to suppress him.
One of the main reasons Musk bought Twitter in October 2022 was because he has always been an advocate for free speech.
Prominent Figures Defend Durov’s Actions
After Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was arrested on suspicion of enabling illegal and criminal acts on the messaging app, several prominent figures in the business spoke out in his defense. As of this writing, the price of Toncoin is $5.69, a 16.33% decline, following the arrest.
Additionally, Elon Musk revealed an interview that Durov had given to American journalist Tucker Carlson in the past, Coingape shares. In that interview, Durov detailed the coercive measures taken by the US government and the FBI to steal one of Telegram's developers and get them access to the messaging app's inner workings.
According to him, the officials were attempting to convince the engineer to embed certain open-source tools inside Telegram, granting them backdoor access.
Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, has remained silent on the subject thus far, in contrast to IT industry heavyweight Elon Musk, who has been vocal in his support of Durov. Musk also attacked Zuckerberg in a tweet that asked why the authorities aren't taking action against Zuck for allowing profiles on Instagram that were used to abuse children. In response, Musk typed:
Buterin Criticizes Government Actions Against Telegram
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has also issued a statement supporting the Telegram CEO, claiming that Buterin had previously banned Durov due to his lack of seriousness over encryption. The charges against Durov, he continued, "looks very bad and worrying for the future of software and comms freedom in Europe" because they have not been moderated.
According to one X platform user, even though popular messaging apps like iMessage and WhatsApp offer end-to-end encryption, they nonetheless give the government backdoor access.
Vitalik then stated, "This is why we need open source and formal verification of security properties" in response. An outspoken supporter of decentralized technology, Vitalik Buterin has detailed the steps Ethereum is doing to implement such a system.
The next targets for government agencies, according to some market analysts, will be Elon Musk's X and Rumble, a video platform.
