Canadian artist Drake's latest high-profile bet ended in disappointment, losing $300,000 in Bitcoin when Canada fell to Argentina in the Copa America semifinals.
Canada's Underdog Status Fails Drake's Bitcoin Bet
Aubrey Drake Graham, best known by his stage name Drake, is a Canadian actor and musician who frequently spends large sums on highly famous sporting events. According to Decrypt, he staked $300,000 worth of Bitcoin (BTC) earlier this week on his native country's semifinal victory over Argentina in the Copa America.
The football squad from Canada was a huge underdog, with odds of 9.60 to claim victory. With the main cryptocurrency, Drake would have made more than $2.5 million.
However, with a score of 2-0, Argentina (the current world champion) came out on top, as was somewhat predicted. After the rapper challenged captain Lionel Messi, Messi scored the second goal.
CryptoPotato shares that this is not the first time the singer has lost a substantial amount of money after placing bets on comparable occurrences. Just one month ago, he staked half a million Bitcoin on the Dallas Mavericks beating the Boston Celtics in the NBA championship.
Despite his best efforts, the Celtics won their 18th consecutive league championship with a final score of 106-88.
From NBA to MMA: Drake's String of Bitcoin Betting Losses
Earlier in 2024, Drake wagered $700,000 worth of Bitcoin on a mixed martial arts bout, anticipating a victory for Sean Strickland over Dricus du Plessis. The wager represented a projected profit of more than $650,000 in Bitcoin. However, the judges' split judgment resulted in the fighter's loss.
In the Spanish Grand Prix, which took place two years ago, he placed a wager of 234,000 Bitcoins on the driver of Ferrari, Charles Leclerc, to finish first. However, Max Verstappen ended up winning the race instead. He also staked $600,000 worth of cryptocurrencies on FC Barcelona to emerge winners in the derby matchup versus Real Madrid. But in the encounter dubbed "El Classico," the Catalonian team came out on the losing end.
How 'The Drake Curse' Continues to Haunt His Bets
“The Drake curse” was coined as a result of his string of betting losses. It relates to a superstition that the team or athlete he publicly supports would do poorly.
