Tesla Semi truck set for 2025 release as Megapack production ramps up at Lathrop facility.

Tesla Inc. has confirmed the launch of its Semi truck for late 2025, with broader customer deliveries expected in 2026. This announcement coincides with the expansion of Tesla's Megapack production at its Lathrop Megafactory, reflecting significant strides in the company's energy sector.

Tesla Outlines Timelines for Semi Launch, Advances in Eco-Friendly Fleet Technology

Tesla has been tapping PepsiCo's knowledge for an early pilot program with the Semi to evaluate real-world efficiency and travel. According to Teslarati's report, Tesla and PepsiCo have been together for two years. As the truck approaches serial production, engineers have been trying to understand how it would make fleets more efficient and ecologically benign.

However, the Semi debut has been delayed multiple times. Still, executives on Tesla's Q1 2024 Earnings Call on Tuesday provided a timeframe for when they expect the haulage vehicle will be ready for more deliveries:

“Our first vehicles are planned for late 2025 of external customers starting in 2026.”

Tesla's desire for a more economical and efficient manufacturing method has caused a delay in production. Additionally, Tesla's semi-production facility is now being developed in Nevada near the Tesla Gigafactory:

“So we’re finalizing the engineering of the Semi to enable like a super cost-effective high-volume production with our learnings from our fleet and pilot fleet and Pepsi’s fleet, which we’re expanding this year marginally. In parallel, as we showed in the shareholder’s deck, we have started construction on the factory in Reno.”

Tesla also exhibited the property where the semi-production facility would be built, as well as the progress of development. Tesla broke ground on the facility in January, almost exactly a year after announcing the $3.6 billion project.

The Semi is one of the most significant breakthroughs in Tesla's present pipeline, as it will allow the business to obtain a vehicle primarily designed for fleets and logistics.

Tesla's Lathrop Megafactory Achieves Record Megapack Production, Boosting Energy Business Profitability

On the other side, Tesla's megafactory in Lathrop, California, is becoming increasingly important to the company's overall operations. This was emphasized in a recent drone flyover of the plant, which revealed more than 330 Megapack batteries in the Megafactory's holding areas.

Tesla Energy is gradually becoming more integrated into the company's broader activities. According to Tesla's Q1 2024 Update Letter, energy generation and storage revenues climbed 7% year on year, but gross profit increased 140% YoY due to increased Megapack deployments. Elon Musk reinforced this argument during the first quarter earnings call, noting that Tesla Energy achieved record profitability in the first quarter of 2024.

“The Tesla team did a great job executing in a tough environment and energy storage deployments of Megapack, in particular, reached an all-time high in Q1 leading to record profitability for the energy business. And that looks likely to continue to increase in the quarters and years ahead,” Musk said.

Aerial footage of the Lathrop Megafactory on April 25, 2024, captured by frequent Tesla watcher Met God in Wilderness, reveals that the facility will stay exceptionally busy throughout the second quarter. The video showed the facility's holding lots were packed with 334 Megapack batteries. This is not a record figure for the Lathrop facility but is still significant. Tesla analysts have estimated that such batteries are worth around $500 million in revenue.

Tesla's Megapack production ramp in Lathrop was addressed during the Q1 earnings call. According to Tesla executives, the ramp of the Megafactory is progressing as anticipated, and a second general assembly line is projected to allow the facility to increase its exit rate to 40 GWh per year by the end of 2025.

“Lathrop is ramping as planned. We have our second GA line allowing us to increase our exit rate from 20 GWh per year to — at the start of this year to 40 GWh per year by the end of the year. That line is commissioned. There’s really nothing limiting the ramp. Given the longer sales cycles for these large projects, we typically have order visibility 12 to 24 months prior to ship dates. So, we’re able to plan the build plan several quarters in advance. So, this allows us to ramp the factory to align with the business and order growth,” Tesla executives noted.
