Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken a firm stand against the idea of a U.S. digital dollar while concurrently supporting the wider realm of cryptocurrencies. In a press conference on Tuesday, DeSantis revealed a series of state legislative proposals that aim to counter what he perceives as the influence of "woke politics."
DeSantis suggested that those who dislike cryptocurrency do so because they cannot control it. He stated that the opposing forces want to rid crypto completely and people have the right to decide whether to invest in it or not. The governor's comments were likely aimed at the Democratic Party in Washington, D.C., which has voiced concerns about the integrity of digital currencies.
Governor DeSantis expressed specific concern about the potential for a centrally-controlled digital currency, believing that it would be fundamentally wrong. The press conference, titled "Government of Laws, Not Woke Politics," reflected DeSantis' opposition to the "Environment, Social, and Governance" (ESG) policies, which could impose financial performance evaluations on organizations based on their adherence to these principles.
DeSantis also proposed a bill that would prohibit discrimination against customers based on their social beliefs, political views, or religious affiliations. He emphasized this as a defense for a range of values and positions.
Furthermore, he linked the idea of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) to "woke" practices, suggesting that CBDC proponents would incorporate ESG criteria and social credit scores into the digital currency, ultimately reducing freedom for Americans.
