Following recent reports that suggested that Brave was working on a crypto wallets feature, the blockchain-based web browser has officially announced that it is developing a cryptocurrency wallet for Ethereum tokens.
In a blog post dated August 27, Brave said that its “Crypto Wallets” will support ether (ETH) and most standard Ethereum tokens and collectibles, including BAT.
“With Crypto Wallets, you can either manage your keys in a software wallet in Brave, or connect a physical hardware wallet (Ledger or Trezor) for more secure key-management,” Brave said.
In addition to supporting Ethereum tokens, the wallet allows interaction with decentralized applications (or DApps) – this feature, according to Brave, makes it “a fully-featured web3 browser.”
However, the wallet currently cannot interact with Brave Rewards, meaning that users cannot transfer BAT directly between Brave Rewards and Crypto Wallets. However, Brave said that it wants to integrate the wallet with Brave Rewards, which will enable users to fully control the keys to their Brave Rewards wallet, as an alternative to Uphold’s custodial wallet.
The feature is currently available in Dev and Nightly builds of Brave. However, the company said that Crypto Wallets has been through extensive testing yet and recommended users to “stick to small amounts and keep regular backups.”
“This isn’t a universal, built-for-everyone feature like Brave Rewards: it’s only for you if you are already familiar with crypto,” it added.
Going forward, Brave intends to add Uphold support to Crypto Wallets, allowing users to manage assets in their Uphold account inside of Crypto Wallets, and directly transfer crypto assets between their verified Uphold account, Brave Rewards, and Crypto Wallets.
Just recently, Brave expanded its crypto tipping facility to Reddit and Vimeo, which was initially launched on Twitter. Users can now tip on both ad-free video platform Vimeo and social discussion network Reddit using Brave’s native crypto Basic Attention Token (BAT).
