Mozilla has recently launched the latest version of its flagship Firefox browser, equipped with default cryptojacking blocking software.
Firefox 69 comes with Enhanced Tracking Protection feature, which is set by default as part of the “Standard” setting in the Firefox browser. The new feature will also block recognized “third-party tracking cookies” according to the Disconnection list, as per its blog.
It noted that there have been increasing cases of cryptojacking, and victims are usually unaware until it is too late. Although the new option can be toggled, it is intended to act as the first line of defense against undercover crypto mining that steals user CPU and resources.
“Enhanced Tracking Protection works behind-the-scenes to keep a company from forming a profile of you based on their tracking of your browsing behavior across websites — often without your knowledge or consent,” Mozilla said.
The attacks are usually done by third parties hijacking extra processing power and capacity on a user device, which is then used to mine cryptocurrencies. Previous victims have complained of highly increased data usage, electricity cost, and hardware damage to their devices because of malicious cryptojacking scripts.
Aside from the cryptojacking protection feature, the browser also offers other privacy features such as counter-fingerprinting measures that aim to prevent unwanted and invasive tracking of user devices and other improvements like the ability to block all auto-play videos.
Mozilla revealed that the default feature was first tested on new users in June 2019. Before it was fully integrated, it underwent rigorous testing and refining. Users will know that the feature is enabled when a shield icon in the address bar is present.
“When you see the shield icon, you should feel safe that Firefox is blocking thousands of companies from your online activity,” the press release noted.
Mozilla further noted that the new features, which are included as the browser’s standard on both desktop and mobile versions, are a response to the demand from users for a more secure browsing experience.
