Intel launches second-gen Bitcoin mining chip Blockscale

Tue, 05 Apr 2022, 14:48 pm UTC

The company will start shipping the new Bitcoin mining chips by the third quarter of this year.

The booming crypto industry has prompted chips manufacturers to come up with hardware specifically tailored to the needs and requirements of cryptocurrency mining. Intel just unveiled its new second-generation Bitcoin (BTC) mining chip called the “Intel Blockscale ASIC” chip, which is touted to be more energy-efficient than most models currently available.

Semiconductor manufacturer Intel just launched its new Bitcoin (BTC) mining chip, Blockscale, on Monday. The second-generation chip is designed to be more energy efficient for proof-of-work algorithms and SHA-256 hashing, which will allow mining firms to build more efficient mining rigs.

“For proof-of-work algorithms that are compatible with ASIC-based systems and SHA-256 hashing, the Intel Blockscale ASIC will provide the energy efficiency and computing power needed to achieve scalability and sustainability,” Intel said. “And given the nature of the silicon powering this technology, Intel will be able to supply it in volume without compromising the supply of new CPUs or GPUs.”

Blockscale will have an operating hash rate of up to 580 gigahasn per second or 0.58 terahash per second and power efficiency of up to 26 joules per terahash (J/TH), according to Cointelegraph. The chip will consume between 4.8 to 22.7 watts of power and features on-chip temperature- and voltage-sensing capabilities. For increased output, the chips can be merged into a single unit of up to 256 integrated circuits per chain.

“The Intel Blockscale ASIC is going to play a major role in helping bitcoin mining companies achieve both sustainability and hash rate scaling objectives in the years ahead,” Intel Blockchain and Business Solutions in the Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics Group general manager Jose Rios said.

The company will start shipping the new Bitcoin mining chips by the third quarter of this year. Intel added that Argo Blockchain, Block, Hive Blockchain Technologies, and GRIID Infrastructure will be among the first firms to develop new systems based on the new ASIC.
