Major European telecom companies are moving forward in their effort to bring blockchain benefits to roaming processes.
Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier, Telefónica and Vodafone conducted blockchain trials with Clear, a developer of blockchain-based settlement and clearing networks.
Currently, roaming partners have to undertake a highly convoluted and largely manual process once a year to determine how much they owe to each other for roaming on their respective networks. The telecom companies explored the potential of blockchain technology to “deliver instantaneous and frictionless commercial roaming processes between hundreds of mobile operators around the globe.”
According to a press release, the trials were facilitated by Clear's B2B platform. The focus was on accessing the technical feasibility of blockchain technology in automating the wholesale roaming discount settlement process.
Clear said that using blockchain technology, they were able to handle a wide range of complex charging models as well as reduce processing times to minutes.
"This is an exciting step forward towards the digital future, enabling further roaming related use cases and business models. There is a huge amount of potential for blockchain to automate many of the industry's manual processes, delivering significant benefits for companies and their customers,” Eran Haggiag, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Clear, said.
The three telcos now intend to work with the wider industry and the GSMA to look into the potential for creating an open blockchain ecosystem and consider the future for ongoing financial settlements based on this technology.
