EnCirca is a domain name registrar and it recently announced that it will be accepting Ethereum addresses.
The new initiative is now in the pre-registration phase so anyone who wants to register .ETH domain names will be able to do so until August 10. Ethereum's .ETH was created to map human-readable domains names to blockchain wallets, facilitating ease of use.
In a press release, EnCirca claims that it is the first domain registrar accredited with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to offer Ethereum addresses. This is meant to expand the wallet convenience for the second-largest blockchain in the world.
EnCirca President Tom Barrett noted in the release how this new project will help with the matter of trademarks.
"Billions of internet users will soon have blockchain wallets for sending and receiving crypto-currencies", says Barrett said. "In response, EnCirca has made it easy for brand owners to protect their trademarks on the blockchain."
The growing menace of cyber-squatting was also brought up in the press release with regards to blockchain domain names. As a result, it is pointed out that Ethereum entities will want to register their brand domain names now as a preemptive measure.
“Blockchain domain names are not regulated like .COM or .ORG domain names. So, the traditional trademark protection mechanisms to prevent cyber-squatting of brand names are nonexistent. Thus, brand owners are advised to defensively protect their trademarks in the .ETH top-level domain as soon as possible,” the press release reads.
Domain names with seven characters or more will be available via an auction, CoinDesk reports. Meanwhile, the domain names that are three to six characters in length have a more specific condition to fulfill. They would need to demonstrate “the longest continuous use of the same name in an existing domain name extension, such as .COM, .US, .ORG etc.”
