A new AI-infused blockchain called Ambient, backed by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and Delphi Digital, is being positioned as a potential replacement for Bitcoin. Co-founded by Travis Good, Ambient is built on the belief that Bitcoin’s cryptographic architecture is aging and may become obsolete within five years. Speaking at ETHDenver, Good argued that Bitcoin’s proof-of-work system, despite billions invested in ASICs, is losing relevance—and miners may soon need a new home.
Ambient could be that home. The network operates on a novel proof-of-work system tailored to AI computing, targeting both Bitcoin miners and developers seeking decentralized AI alternatives. Unlike existing platforms like Bittensor, Ambient integrates AI directly into its core, allowing users to access powerful, open AI models with verifiable outputs.
Good envisions Ambient as a decentralized answer to OpenAI—offering fast, affordable, and transparent AI that prioritizes user trust. Key to this is “verified inference,” where miners validate AI outputs, ensuring authenticity and preventing tampering by bad actors, including state-sponsored threats like North Korea’s Lazarus group.
The blockchain, while drawing security inspiration from Bitcoin, functions more like Solana in its performance. With $7.2 million raised through a16z’s crypto accelerator and strong VC interest in the crypto-AI intersection, Ambient is poised to challenge centralized AI services, which critics argue lack transparency and expose users to flawed or manipulated data.
By combining decentralized infrastructure with AI at its core, Ambient aims to reshape the future of blockchain and artificial intelligence—potentially becoming the next frontier for Bitcoin-era miners and AI developers alike.
