Consumers have reported receiving fake emails asking for their Bitcoin wallet information.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has issued a warning that crypto scammers are using its office’s name as well as the names of the agency’s senior officials in a new scheme. The scammers are asking their intended victims for their Bitcoin (BTC) wallet keys via fake emailed letters for the purpose of sending funds to the addressee.

According to the OCC, consumers have reported receiving these fictitious emailed messages instructing them to give their “Bitcoin Wallet Address ID NO.” The scammers try to convince their intended victims to give the information so they can receive money from the agency.

“Your fund $10.5M is ready to be paid to you,” the fictitious letter reads. “Note your fund can only be paid to you VIA a Bitcoin Wallet Address ID NO. Due to too much charges/fees been demanded by the banks and government officials before they can sign for the release of funds belonging to foreigners, the IMF. UNITED NATIONS and WORLD BANK have made a new policy that any debt or payment belonging to an individual above $1M should be paid through a bitcoin wallet address.”

The OCC warned that any communication claiming that the agency is holding funds on behalf of any individual or entity is fraudulent. The agency stressed that it does that participate in fund transfer activities on behalf of government entities, corporations, or individuals.

For those who have received such letters, the OCC instructs recipients not to respond. The agency also recommends that such cases should be reported to the appropriate agency such as the OCC by email at [email protected], the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Office of Inspector General (OIG) via its website, the National Consumers League (NCL) or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
