Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is facing growing scrutiny after reports revealed he received approximately £5 million ($6.7 million) from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne in 2024, shortly before launching his successful campaign for the Clacton parliamentary seat. The development, first reported by The Guardian, has triggered political backlash, with both the Conservative Party and Labour raising concerns over potential breaches of parliamentary rules.

According to Farage, the financial gift was intended for personal security and long-term stability. In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, he explained that the funds were meant to ensure he remains “safe and secure for the rest of my life,” referencing past incidents including a 2019 milkshake attack and a reported firebomb incident at his home. Harborne, a Thailand-based businessman and significant stakeholder in stablecoin issuer Tether, made the payment before Farage officially became a Member of Parliament.

Reform UK has defended the transaction, describing it as a “personal unconditional gift” unrelated to Farage’s political ambitions. Party representatives insist the funds were properly declared and fall within existing rules that exempt purely personal gifts from certain disclosure requirements. However, the Commons code of conduct states that MPs must register any benefits received within the 12 months prior to election if there is any doubt regarding their nature.

The controversy has prompted the Conservatives to formally refer the matter to Parliamentary Standards Commissioner Daniel Greenberg. They are seeking clarification on whether any portion of the funds may have indirectly supported political activities. Meanwhile, Labour officials have publicly accused Farage of potentially violating parliamentary standards.

The situation also highlights broader concerns surrounding cryptocurrency donations in UK politics. Harborne has previously donated £9 million to Reform UK, marking one of the largest political contributions in British history. Additionally, BitMEX co-founder Ben Delo reportedly contributed £4 million to the party this year. In response to rising concerns, the UK government recently imposed a ban on crypto donations to political parties, citing risks of foreign financial influence.

Further fueling debate, Farage recently invested £215,000 in Stack BTC, a London-listed bitcoin treasury firm chaired by former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng. The ongoing developments continue to raise questions about transparency, political funding, and the growing influence of cryptocurrency wealth in UK elections.
