SEC Approves Options Trading for BlackRock’s Ethereum ETF

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has approved options trading for BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA), marking a significant milestone in the growing institutional adoption of Ethereum (ETH). The decision enables investors to trade options contracts tied to ETHA, allowing for more sophisticated investment strategies such as hedging and leveraging.

The approval came in response to a proposal submitted by Nasdaq ISE in July 2023, which sought to list options on BlackRock’s spot Ethereum ETF. The SEC was required to make a decision by Wednesday, and analysts, including Bloomberg Intelligence's James Seyffart, had anticipated a green light, calling the move “100% expected.”

Options are a powerful tool used by institutional investors to manage risk or amplify exposure. With the SEC’s approval, ETHA becomes the first and only spot ether ETF currently eligible for options trading. This exclusive status positions BlackRock at the forefront of Ethereum-based investment vehicles.

Other Ethereum ETFs, such as those listed on NYSE Arca and Cboe, are not yet approved for options trading. However, Cboe has submitted its own filing to offer options on the ETFs it lists, signaling potential expansion in the near future.
