Bitcoin vs Gold: Experts Debate Safe-Haven Potential Amid ETF Growth

Bitcoin (BTC), the world’s leading cryptocurrency, continues to gain ground on traditional assets like gold. Venture capitalist Tim Draper recently declared "gold is dead," emphasizing Bitcoin's dynamic market performance. However, Bloomberg Intelligence strategist Mike McGlone offered a more nuanced perspective, suggesting rising U.S. Treasury yields could favor gold in the short term.

On May 22, 2025, McGlone highlighted that with the U.S. 30-year Treasury yield at 5.15% and Bitcoin trading at $112,000, macroeconomic conditions could revive gold's safe-haven appeal. He questioned whether Bitcoin could truly decouple from risk assets like the S&P 500 and maintain momentum during economic uncertainty, which historically benefits gold.

Still, other market analysts remain bullish on Bitcoin. Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad Poor Dad, underscored Bitcoin’s 21 million coin supply cap as a key differentiator. Unlike gold or silver, which can still be mined, Bitcoin’s fixed supply positions it as a unique store of value. Kiyosaki even predicts BTC could hit $250,000 by the end of 2025.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are showing strong growth. Since launch, cumulative inflows into Bitcoin ETFs have reached $44.53 billion—closing in on gold ETFs, which currently hold $100 billion in assets. Despite gold’s long-standing dominance, the rapid rise of Bitcoin ETFs in less than two years signals shifting investor preferences.

As Bitcoin continues to test new highs and institutional adoption accelerates, the crypto-versus-gold debate is far from over. Whether BTC can surpass gold as the ultimate safe-haven asset may depend on macroeconomic shifts and investor sentiment in the months ahead.
