The Web3 gaming platform developed by Immutable is now in its public testing phase, thanks to a joint effort with Polygon Labs. This collaboration has been in the works since March, following Immutable's announcement about its alliance with Polygon Labs. Interestingly, Polygon had introduced its zkEVM – an Ethereum scaling solution – to the mainnet on March 27.
Immutable aims to make its Ethereum Virtual Machine based on zero-knowledge (zkEVM) available to game developers. This move is poised to present developers with the dual advantage of reduced developmental costs and the benefits inherent in the Ethereum ecosystem. Robbie Ferguson, Immutable’s co-founder and president, emphasized that the zkEVM platform is primarily designed to enhance the ownership rights of Web3 gaming enthusiasts.
In support of Immutable's new venture, over 20 game companies have pledged their allegiance. Big names such as GameStop, iLogos. TokenTrove marketplace, and a few more are on the list. Currently, 12 game developers have initiated the process of crafting their Web3 titles on zkEVM. Among them, MetalCore is set to beta launch on Immutable's zkEVM platform come September 15.
The testnet of Immutable zkEVM aims to harness the power of zero-knowledge proofs to ensure a seamless transfer process between its platform and Sepolia Ethereum. This setup is intended to provide developers with a taste of how the mainnet will function after its official launch.
Immutable's recent release can interact smoothly with Ethereum applications. It provides an avenue for developers to move their Ethereum-based projects onto this new platform, requiring very few alterations. In a forthcoming development, Immutable plans to launch a Relayer that focuses on currency abstraction and gas sponsorship, offering game developers the opportunity to set up gas-free wallet accounts.
Alex Connolly, Immutable’s Chief Technology Officer and co-founder, is confident that the new network will be a hit among developers. He believes that the combination of the new chain with their existing platform products provides a comprehensive solution exclusively tailored to the gaming industry.
Ethereum's creator, Vitalik Buterin, recently shared his thoughts on zkEVMs. He believes that despite potential latency and data inefficiency issues, they might play a pivotal role in enhancing Ethereum's scalability.
