Metaplanet Surpasses Tesla in Bitcoin Holdings, Aims for 210K BTC by 2027

Metaplanet Surpasses Tesla in Bitcoin Holdings, Aims for 210K BTC by 2027.

Japanese investment firm Metaplanet (3350.T) has significantly increased its Bitcoin (BTC) holdings with the purchase of an additional 1,234 BTC, bringing its total to 12,345 BTC—worth approximately $1.3 billion at current prices. With this latest acquisition, Metaplanet has overtaken Tesla and Hut 8 to become the seventh-largest corporate holder of Bitcoin globally and the only Asian company in the top 10.

Originally a hospitality company, Tokyo-based Metaplanet pivoted to Bitcoin in April 2024, starting with a $6.5 million purchase. Since then, the firm has aggressively expanded its crypto portfolio, funding acquisitions through bond issuances and equity raises. In a bold move, the company aims to hold 21,000 BTC by the end of 2026 and an ambitious 210,000 BTC—equivalent to 1% of Bitcoin’s total supply—by the end of 2027.

Earlier this month, Metaplanet announced plans to raise $5 billion to fund further Bitcoin purchases, primarily through equity warrants issued by its Florida-based subsidiary, marking the largest equity warrant offering by a Japanese firm. This strategy grants Metaplanet access to U.S. capital markets and has fueled a recent double-digit rally in its share price.

The firm now plans to hit the 100,000 BTC milestone by the end of 2026, accelerating its original roadmap. As institutional demand for Bitcoin rises globally, Metaplanet’s aggressive accumulation strategy positions it as a key player in the corporate crypto investment space. With its growing footprint, the company is rapidly emerging as Asia’s MicroStrategy-style Bitcoin bull, further reinforcing the narrative of institutional adoption in the digital asset market.
