The Angel Drainer phishing group has managed to steal more than $400,000 from 128 cryptocurrency wallets by employing a novel tactic.

Recent reports have unveiled a significant breach in the cryptocurrency sphere, orchestrated by the notorious Angel Drainer phishing group.

The group's latest exploit resulted in the illicit acquisition of over $400,000 from a staggering 128 cryptocurrency wallets, employing a sophisticated new tactic to evade detection.

Blockaid's Discovery and Response

The breach came to light through the vigilant efforts of Blockaid, a reputable blockchain security company. Through a disclosure on X (formerly Twitter), Blockaid revealed that the attack unfolded at 6:40 am on February 12, 2024.

By strategically targeting Safe vault contracts, Angel Drainer capitalized on users' unsuspecting interactions with a malicious Safe vault contract, inducing them to unwittingly authorize a 'Permit2' transaction. This maneuver ultimately facilitated the unlawful extraction of $403,000.

Blockaid's swift response to the breach was crucial in containing the damage.

According to Crypto Potato, the security firm promptly notified Safe of the attack and initiated proactive measures to mitigate any potential further harm. Despite the breach not directly targeting Safe, Blockaid reassured the platform's user base of the minimal impact, emphasizing their commitment to bolstering security protocols.

Rise of Wallet Drainers: A Growing Threat

The emergence of wallet drainers as a prevalent threat in the cryptocurrency landscape has raised alarms within the community.

These malicious actors deploy deceptive tactics, often infiltrating fraudulent websites with malicious software to dupe users into authorizing detrimental transactions, leading to unauthorized asset withdrawals.

Scam Sniffer, a leading Web3 anti-scam platform, has documented numerous wallet drainers absconding with staggering sums, totaling over $295 million from approximately 324,000 individuals in the past year alone.

Despite previous crackdowns on similar groups like Inferno Drainer, the persistence of entities like Angel Drainer underscores the persistent threat posed by cybercriminals in the cryptocurrency domain.

Moving Forward

As the cryptocurrency ecosystem evolves, safeguarding against such threats becomes paramount.

According to Coin Telegraph, vigilance, robust security measures, and proactive efforts to educate users are essential in fortifying defenses against potential attacks.

By fostering a culture of awareness and resilience, the crypto community can collectively combat the rising tide of malicious activities orchestrated by groups like Angel Drainer.
