Ubisoft Explores the Intersection of Gaming and Blockchain with Smart Collectibles

In the autumn of the previous year, gaming giant Ubisoft declared that it would venture into the realm of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) only when it could bring "true value" to the users. It appears that they have found their way, as Ubisoft has entered into a partnership with a company known as Integrated Reality Labs (IRL). Their collaboration will yield a collection of "Smart Collectibles," minuscule acrylic cubes featuring characters from the popular game series Assassin's Creed, each linked to a unique NFT.

This development was first brought to light by VGC. The NFTs corresponding to these cubes will be secured on the Polygon blockchain. Users will be able to interact with these NFTs via a specially designed application available for download.

Upon acquiring a one-of-a-kind Assassin's Creed character, such as Ezio, users will have the ability to awaken and customize them on their mobile devices using IRL's innovative "Soul Customizer." This intriguingly titled feature essentially functions as a digital closet. Within this space, users can modify their character's attire, weapons, and stance, thereby transforming their digital soul into a distinctive Smart Collectible.

This move by Ubisoft brings to mind the recent endeavor by Yu Suzuki involving Virtua Fighter NFTs. The extent of Ubisoft's involvement appears to be primarily focused on licensing the Assassin's Creed brand to IRL, but this is nonetheless an intriguing development, particularly in light of the company's previous assertions about only promoting NFTs that offer practical benefits.

There is yet no word from IRL regarding when the inaugural drop of these digital souls will occur, nor what the pricing structure for each rarity tier will be when they are eventually made available. This collaboration between Ubisoft and IRL further illustrates the growing intersection of gaming and blockchain technology, as NFTs continue reshaping the landscape of digital collectibles.
