In the world of technology, groundbreaking strides forward are not uncommon. The latest is the revelation that The Open Network (TON), an offshoot of a project initially kick-started by the Telegram messaging app team, has leaped user privacy by introducing an encrypted messaging feature. This new enhancement, announced on July 3, allows for secure and confidential conversations between TON users.
TON's establishment was built on adaptation and innovation. Originally founded by the Telegram team, the project was abandoned in mid-2020 before getting a mainnet off the ground. However, the left-behind code was open-sourced, permitting the construction of new frameworks based on its foundation. The TON Foundation picked up the mantle and used this digital bedrock to build the existing network known as "TON".
The TON Foundation asserts that its network offers enhanced scalability and transaction throughput compared to other solutions in the Web3 realm, all while maintaining decentralization—a key feature in this tech sphere.
While TON users could always send messages with their transactions, they were fully public. Now, the network has upped the ante by facilitating end-to-end encrypted messages. This ensures that only the intended recipient can decipher the contents, enhancing user privacy.
Anatoly Makosov, a core developer at TON, believes that this step forward is a significant move towards personalized payments. In addition, he touts its utility in a worst-case scenario where traditional messaging servers might fail, positioning TON as a trustworthy and secure medium for private communication.
Currently, several retail wallet apps support this encrypted messaging feature. The Tonkeeper mobile wallet will soon join this list, as indicated in the announcement.
This move by TON comes close on the heels of its launch of a $25 million accelerator program in May, aimed at incentivizing app developers to build on their network. In November, an autonomous development team took advantage of this by launching a Telegram trading bot to facilitate user integration into the TON network.
