It appears that Maya (formerly PayMaya), a payments app based in the Philippines, has been giving away Bitcoin (BTC) to its users in the past few days. Netizens became curious after a number of billboards have been popping up across the country instructing specific users to check their crypto wallets while some app users have reportedly confirmed receiving free Bitcoin giveaways.

The billboards have piqued the curiosity of many netizens especially since the billboards are calling on Maya app users by names instructing them to check their crypto wallets, Manila Bulletin reported. The all-in-one money app has a crypto feature that allows users to buy, sell, and hold digital currencies such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) for as low as P1.

The Maya app is previously known as PayMaya and is powered by Maya Bank allowing it to offer e-wallets and digital banking services such as savings and credit products. Maya has kept up with the developments in the fintech space and now holds a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license issued by the central bank, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

While some netizens are merely curious about the fuzz over the fee Bitcoin giveaways, a few actually confirmed receiving the free crypto themselves. “Just checked my Maya wallet and why do I have free BTC??? What's this giveaway!!!,” a user named Jayvee posted on Twitter on August 17.

Another user named Veronica likewise confirmed receiving some BTC but also asked how the crypto can be used. “Yes, I think Maya is really giving free Bitcoin now. I also received some, but how can I use them?” the user said (translated from Pilipino).

While most Maya users probably did not receive some free crypto, it’s not something they should be too worried about. Based on the screenshots of the transaction shared by Jayvee, Maya is giving away just small amounts of the crypto.

For example, Jaycee received 0.000007203 BTC in one transaction which is valued at P9.98 or just around 20 cents. The second transaction is even smaller at 0.000002537 valued at P3.50.

Just to be sure, Maya users should check their crypto wallets now in case they received some free crypto without receiving any notification. It is advisable to update their Maya app to the latest version, according to Rappler.
